Woodland by the Beach…
In Santa Barbara’s Mesa neighborhood, blocks from the beach, a giant Tipu tree valiantly gave its life so the owners could make the most of their new back yard. We kept the sister and the stump became a table.
Removing a large Tipu tree and its heavy surface roots opened up enough space in this small yard to create a dining patio and surround it with lush green plants.
A simple floor of decomposed granite makes for a casual setting for entertaining.
The owners thought this structure was a tear-down, but a few screws and come new boards made the perfect nook to get lost in a book.
The dining table looks out at the remaining Tipu tree and a sunny patch of foliage beyond.
The Tipu tree wasn't a complete loss.
California native Redbud (Cercis occidentalis) adds a sweet burst of color in late winter.
Light colored foliage is the key to waking up a shade garden - Phormium 'Cream Delight' and Dwarf 'Creme de Menthe' Tobira.
Sango Kaku Japanese Maple set agains a cool grey wall as spring foliage emerges.
On the way to the back yard, the bright green foliage of Lomandra 'Breeze' plays nicely with compact Mondo Grass.
Before - The owners thought this would be a tear-down. A little rehab made it shine.
