Curb Appeal on a Grand Scale
The view from the house to the Channel Islands is sublime. But seeing the street below? Not so much. Worn out junipers were replaced with a carpet of color and a row of mahogany-hued flax to screen the view of the street from the dining patio.
Large scale front yards don't need to be fussy. Planting in large swathes makes them easy to "read."
It took a crane to place these sandstone boulders and a stairway winds down to the lower terrace.
Along the driveway, a young Mediterranean Fan Palm is kept company by brightly flowering 'Moonshine' Yarrow and deep purple Mexican Sage.
The mahogany-colored New Zealand Flax is just tall enough to cut off the view of the street without interrupting the ocean view. The color echoes the wood trim and silvery native sage adds contrast.
My go-to ground cover, Carex 'Blue Zinger', is the carpeting that sets off the strong flower colors.
Time for your sunglasses when Mexican Marigold bursts forth in winter.
